I am in awe of Karen White's writing. Wishing I had more words to describe how captivating, engaging, and just plain enjoyable a read. The characters are well developed which is such a bonus since when I read I decide if I would like the character as a friendly neighbor, or a friend, or a confidant et al.
This book was challenging to put down and I read chapters prior to turning off my light to sleep. Then I would turn on my morning light (usually around 5am after letting the pups outside for a bit)...and read a couple of chapters prior to feeding the pups and making coffee.
This book gives insight into certain values, social class issues, the "one romantic love" of sisters, and love of a parent for a sick child recovering from illness and then a car accident.
I found myself putting the book down and just thinking and feeling what I had just read. I now want to read all of Karen White's books. Appreciation abounds for such spirit and talent of an author.I am in awe of Karen White's writing. Wishing I had more words to describe how captivating, engaging, and just plain enjoyable a read. One of those "don't want to put it down" novels. I appreciated all the characters and truly was surprised by the name of the "bookkeeper". Sandra Brown knows how to develop characters to where you like or dislike them. I'm not thrilled when one author is compared to another. From my view, each author has a rhythm that either captures me or doesn't. Charles Martin captures me from beginning to end. Sometimes, his detail is a bit too much for me e.g. his description of the geography of this river, however, the story, the characters, and the descriptions of the thoughts and feelings are captivating. This story was a bit frightening in that the description of the heinous symptoms of cancer were so realistic portrayed that it was challenging to read at times. My father died of pancreatic cancer and dwindled from 180 pound to 78 pounds at his death. That real life experience place me into a place of remembering as I read what Abbie was experiencing and Doss's anguish at watching his wife go through the pain.
Mr. Martin's descriptions of feelings and his determination to fulfill her last wishes is love beyond anything that I have personally experienced and a part of me wishes that I had.
Mr. Martin's acknowledgments in all of his books show a personal side of him that is refreshing and reflective of his male + female characters. Indomitable. What a word filled with grace. Such is the storytelling talent of Charles Martin.I'm not thrilled when one author is compared to another. From my view, each author has a rhythm that either captures me or doesn't. I gave it a 3 rating just because of the actors and particularly the dog.
It was probably one of the worst movies that I have watched and I fast forwarded a lot just to get through the boring repetition.
The scenery was gorgeous yet again, too much of the same then the same.
The acting was mediocre even from these great actors who didn't have a script that would challenge their talents.
Will read the book because Charles Martin writes in a way that interests me.I gave it a 3 rating just because of the actors and particularly the dog.

Another compelling story...every scene's description puts the reader right there participating and experiencing in the action. One of the critics states that the author Charles Martin is a "romantic" writer...when I looked up romantic, the definition that worked for me was "an idealized view of reality"which was part of this plot. The first definition was "expression of love"...which this book truly expressed in a love for humanity expressed by the characters and frankly, with such divine abilities expressed through the human spirit. I am grateful that I could read this book and ponder it.
At the end of the book, Mr. Martin wrote about his personal indifference (as expressed in the book) to the plight of people who were poor, who lived in squalor, and who had lost "hope" and that his own indifference had made a radical shift. It has also inspired my pondering of my own indifference and how to shift it.Another compelling story...every scene's description puts the reader right there participating and experiencing in the action. This book was captivating. I read it in two days...and could hardly put it down. The descriptions of the war, then the aftermath places the reader as if "there". The feelings of the main character "Jo-Jo" were superbly described again, placing the reader in the midst of the action. Oh gosh...where to begin.
The writing is beyond brilliant, descriptive, detailed, with use of words that I had to use a dictionary to find the meaning which was a delicious vocabulary enhancer.
I could hardly put this book down and it was written from a view of a teen that was truly fascinating and appealing to adult thinking.
The plot was unbelievably woven with surprises that will stick with me over time. I didn't want the book to end...although the ending was breath taking. I had to reread portions of it in order to process it.
Do yourself a favor and read this book. I'm actually thinking of purchasing it as a gift for various friends.
Also his book BONE WHITE...is beyond words to recommend.Oh gosh...where to begin.

The first chapter of any Patterson book I've read captivates me into continuing to read and enjoy. Not this one. I was bored and I refuse to continue reading something this uncaptivating. Darn. I think Patterson may have just put his name on it rather than participating in writing it. Not sure he even read it. Was thoroughly disappointed...aaaaack!The first chapter of any Patterson book I've read captivates me into continuing to read and enjoy. Not this one. I am used to the fast rhythm of Kellerman, Balducci, and Patterson thus reading this book was sometimes challenging. It gave me the opportunity of slowing down and appreciating the storytelling ability of this author Ernest J. Gaines.
The plot was interesting, a bit complex, yet development of the characters was intriguing and frankly quite brilliant. For example, the character Marcus was pulling corn and the overseer's horse was six inches away and blowing hot air on his neck as he worked. I could "picture" this repeated imagery as it was described in such creative ways.
I recommend this book if you are willing to be enthralled with a slow paced yet creatively brilliant character development and story.I am used to the fast rhythm of Kellerman, Balducci, and Patterson thus reading this book was sometimes challenging. I am a Kellerman fan, probably more Faye than Jonathan/Jesse.
This book was a challenge. I kept at it until the end however still am scratching my head saying "whaaaat?" Wonderment came up frequently...and I didn't want to go back and try to figure out what was really happening by re-reading. So I plowed through it...and "plowing" is the best description. I couldn't summarize the plot if you held a gun to my head.I am a Kellerman fan, probably more Faye than Jonathan/Jesse.

My rating was barely a two. This is not heated passion as much as repetitious descriptions that had me skipping ahead. Stunningly written book. There is a wolf sanctuary in Conroe Texas where I want to go for "howl night". The information written about the pack, the rankings, the job of each wolf, and the manner in which they conduct themselves is intriguing.

Raised in Wisconsin, I decided to read this book. I was stunned at how much I enjoyed it.
Since I was raised during the integration of schools although I went to a parochial school, it was such a perceptive story.
I wept at the end.
