I very much like the novels James Patterson still writes on his own (no co-authors). The Alex Cross series is a great example of how well he continues centering Alec Cross, his wife Bree, and John Sampson into novels where they are chasing bad people. Great character development and a super storyline. ALEX CROSS MUST DIE is his latest in the series and it is a well developed thriller as usual (no spoilers from me). You can tell how popular this series is by the fact there are still 63 people who have the book on hold.I very much like the novels James Patterson still writes on his own (no co-authors). After Robert B. Parker's death, Ace Atkins was selected to carry on with Parker's Spenser series - a task he carried extremely well for 10 more Spenser novels. That torch has now been passed along to Mike Lupika, another highly skilled and prolific novelist. Lupika's first go at a Spenser novel is BROKEN TRUST. Not at all surprising to me is that Lupika also does a very credible job at capturing the long-standing characters of Spenser novels including Spenser, Susan, Hawk and so many others you will recognize. In addition, he has woven the characters into a really well crafted story (no spoilers from me). Great read! Enjoy. After Robert B. Marc Cameron continues to do a good job of keeping the Jack Ryan novels of Tom Clancy alive with the same characters Clancy created - with some positive additions as well. His storyline is interesting and wide in its scale of locations. Fun read. In Kyle Mills' CODE RED he delivered a great job of carrying on with VInce Flynn's Mitch Rapp series. Fun read even with the usual complicated storyline. While Clive Cussler's name headlines the cover of THE CORSICAN SHADOW, the cover shows the solo writer in this case was Clive's son, Dirk Cussler. To Dirk Cussler's credit, the novel stays true to the kind of stories his father had created for so long, and has stayed true to the characters his father has created. Dirk didn't fall far from the apple tree. The story is interesting, the character development is great, and its a fun read. THE SECRET by Lee Child & Andrew Child (literally) is so much better than their last attempt to write a Jack Reacher novel together. THE SECRET is every bit as good as the many Reacher novels. I am a long time fan of Nelson DeMille. He and his son Alex have teamed up to give us a great story to work through. Complicated story line which reaches back in history and then comes forward to modern times. No spoilers from me. Brodie and Taylor are back and teamed up again. Great read. 12 MONTHS TO LIVE by James Patterson and Mike Lupika makes for an interesting read. No spoilers from me. The storyline is well developed and has lots of twists and turns. Character development is well done, and with a nice dose of humerous/sarcastic back and forth at times. My one and only complaint with this story is that the ending is not the usual blockbuster reveal - instead it just fades into the sunset. Still worth the read. I thought 23-1/2 LIES by James Patterson was going to be the next installment of the Women's Murder Club series. Instead it turned out to be three short stories. The Women's Murder Club was very good as was Fallen Ranger. I did not read the 3rd story. My fault for not paying attention to what was really between the covers. In TRAITORS GATE, Jeffrey Archer continues his interesting series of "cops and robbers" with police Superintendent William Warwick (soon to be named Chief Superintendent - my only spoiler for this novel) and his persistent antoginist Miles Faulkner. DEAD FALL by Brad Thor continues the saga of Scott Harvath. One spoiler from me is that most of this story centers on Harvath being tasked with going into war torn Ukraine to rescue an American aid worker. As usual with Thor there are several other subplots taking place unrelated to Harvath's part. Thor does a credible job of keeping the Harvath persona alive, including the fact that Harvath isn't as young as he once was and is feeling some of the pain of aging while carrying out his mission. Nice to idea to "age" your long-standing characters if you are a writer.DEAD FALL by Brad Thor continues the saga of Scott Harvath. Don Bentley's WEAPONS GRADE (Tom Clancy) does a great job of continuing the Jack Ryan Jr. series since Clancy's passing away. As usual, there are a lot of balls in air throughout this novel and some interesting dialogue. Also some science fiction elements that are probably not far off in the future (which is a bit unsettling). Lots of bad guys in this story. Great read. So THE 9th MAN isn't of the great vintage of Steve Berry and the Cotton Malone and Cassiopeia Witt era. Daniel Silva's books featuring Gabriel Allon have all been awesome. THE COLLECTOR is another example of his great skills in story telling and character development. Usually, I would give his books a 4.5 or 5 rating, but this one I downgraded to a 4.0 - Still a great read. My only compaint is that the first 250 pages introduced so many new characters and organizations that it was distracting trying to keep up with the story as it developed. The last 150 pages were perfect as the pieces all came together in typical Silva fashion. Ignore my whining and enjoy the book.Daniel Silva's books featuring Gabriel Allon have all been awesome. James Patterson and James O. Born have delivered a new Detective Michael Bennett novel in OBSESSED. Usual great stuff and characters, good and bad. They also continue the trend of Bennett having to juggle the daily struggles in his workload with having a family of 10 kids to care about - which I usually find interesting. Great read. James Lee Burke in his aknowledgments at the end of FLAGS ON THE BAYOU says he thinks this is his best book ever. I some ways I agree with him. Set towards the end of the Civil War, the novel encompasses both the chaos of a war coming near its end and personalizes it with characters (black and white, slaves and freed, soldiers and civilians) struggling to deal with the whole mess. Having read a lot of civil war history, I found this book fascinating in its effort to bring the struggle down to the level of a few individuals rather than sweeping battles with thousands of soldiers. I didn't have any trouble finishing the book. Great read. EnjoyJames Lee Burke in his aknowledgments at the end of FLAGS ON THE BAYOU says he thinks this is his best book ever. James Patterson with Brendan DuBois' novel CROSS DOWN takes on a new format. In this one Alex Cross is largely out of the picture due to hospitalization. Thus, the first person narrator for this particular story is his long-time friend and colleague, John Sampson DC Metro police detective. Mike Maden had done a fine job of keeping Clive Cussler's Oregon Files series going. His latest, FIRE STRIKE, keeps Cussler's characters true to their creator's original writing without missing a beat. Maden is somewhat wordier that Cussler, which doesn't bother me at all.
