I loved the main character. He is INCORRIGIBLE. He steals everything in sight. He sasses the man his life depends on. And he attacks a man for throwing a book at a girl. It isn't a perfect book, but I eagerly anticipate the rest of the trilogy. Excellent choice for boys and girls alike. #imaginet... Read More »

First page in and I already knew that it was going to be a good book. Literally.

The whole book series in general is just great. I would totally 100% recommend this book to people who are into adventure and fantasy (no magic though). The characters are fun to read about and I think the main character’s witty and more rebellious personality is nice for a change. The many little jokes and quick humor gave this book a fresher, lighter mood. Even so there were still many more intense moments in this book that left on the edge of your seat waiting to see what would happen next.

This entire series is really well written. All the characters are in the story for a reason and the entire plot is written so well. The four orphans were written in a way that you can clearly differentiate them from each other. I think that the author also did a great job with Sage's personality and I loved how there were so many smaller moments in conversations were you could see his great personality shine through. Truly the entire cast of characters were all well written. Not to mention the great world building skills demonstrated in this book, as everything seemed to fit very nicely and make since.

People should totally give this book a try. 10/10, I can't properly express how fun of a read this truly was.

The False Prince by Jennifer A. Nielsen is the first book of the Ascendance Trilogy. Fourteen-year-old Sage is forced to compete with other orphans for the role of impersonating a prince. I would rate this book 5/5 stars because of how fabulous it was. Sage’s voice was beautiful, and I adored the protagonist himself. The rest of the characters in the story were also quite interesting. The plot was unique, the pacing was great, the plot twist blew my mind, and I liked the romance. The worldbuilding was elaborated on just enough to suffice the plot; it wasn’t that complex, but it didn’t need to be. Overall, this book was phenomenal. I loved this book and I have to say that even if you don't enjoy this book, the trilogy just keeps getting better and better from here! The whole family enjoyed it as a bedtime story.

I am currently reading this book with my class, and everyone is enjoying the novel. My teacher is also very good at leaving us hanging about what happens next and about who will really be chosen as Connor's "False Prince". I have already read the book before and am looking forward to reading the second book in the series. For everyone that has not already read the Ascendance Trilogy by Jennifer Nielsen, I recommend to do so. I have only read the first book, but am going to read the other two. The False Prince is an enriching tale about 3 Orphans that are entwined in a competition to be a replacement Prince Jaron.
In conclusion, you should read the Ascendance Trilogy!!!

I absolutely LOVED The False Prince! It has everything that a good book should: interesting characters, unique story, unpredictable plot twists . . . This is definitely one of the best books I have read recently.
If you like this book, I recommend reading the second (I haven't read the third yet, but plan to do so soon).

This is a very good novel and I recommend it to others who like action and fantasy. It is PG which means kids can read this book. In this book, the main conflict is Sage, Tobias, and Roden are taken from orphanages and are forced to compete in a competition to become the missing Prince Jaron and take control of the kingdom. If you enjoy the first book, I suggest you read the 2nd book and 3rd book "The Runaway King" and "The Shadow Throne". Overall, it's one of the best story's I like and you will be hooked to it once you start reading it.

This is one of my favorite books by far (which is saying something because I read a ton). I recommend reading this book twice or at least go back and skim the book again once you have finished it. Those of you who have already read it know why. For any of you who are even considering this book, just do it. Definitely worth it.

"Hail His Majesty, the scourge of my life!" Conner said to Roden and Tobias as he stomped up the stairs."I fear the devils no longer because I have the worst of them here in my home!"
perhaps, but I'm handsomer, don't you think?

apparently the nagging voice hadn't visited Latamer's head.

"You're the craziest person I've ever met.Tobias may be more educated than you, but he's not the smartest of us."

"I definitely don't like pain," I said firmly. "So if you decide to kill me make it quick."

" I never said that the dirt detracted from your beauty highness, only that it was there."

"You're worse than when I last saw you"Mott said.
"You shouldn't have whipped me so hard."
" You shouldn't have gotten yourself stabbed."

"I trust you." Tobias paused, as if weighing his own words."I do, Sage. I trust you."

"I've always thought I looked more like myself than anyone else."

"There's your alm for forgiveness, Roden. pay to the gods or the devils,or to Conner, whichever alter you bow to.but don't ask it from me."

Conner's hand flew to his mouth. "How can I have been so foolish? The devils must be laughing, for I nearly ruined everything!"

violet_zebra_407 Mar 07, 2016

"They look angry," Tobias said to me."What did you do?"
"Is it always something I've done?" I asked."Don't you and Roden ever do anything to get their attention?"
"It's always something you've done." Roden agreed.

"you stole it from the master."
"Who stole it from me.What I did only set the universe back in order."

"Nice trick." Tobias said.
"It helps me think."
"What are you thinking about?"
"Ways to get you to stop talking to me.'

In the country of Carthya, a devious nobleman engages four orphans in a brutal competition to be selected to impersonate the king's long-missing son in an effort to avoid a civil war.

Jun 04, 2015

Sage is a fourteen year-old orphan who steals a roast from a local butcher, but is saved from his wrath by a nobleman named Bevin Conner. Conner is visiting different orphanages, and buying teenage boys who resemble the missing Prince Jaron, heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Carthya. Conner is a minor regent of the circle that surrounds the King. The King's wife and oldest son have been murdered. Conner is a patriot who wants to see the kingdom of Carthya preserved, rather than fall into civil war at the hands of Prime Regent Veldergraft. He therefore concocts the plan to place a fraud on the throne to avert the coming war. Jaron has been missing for years, and is presumed dead following a pirate attack.

Over the next two weeks, Sage and two other boys compete against each other to become Conner's choice for the imposter. By the end of the two weeks, Sage emerges as the choice, but spares the lives of his two competitors. Sage reveals that he is indeed Prince Jaron himself, stunning all those around him, including the king's court. It is further revealed that Conner is responsible for the murder of the royal family and led the pirate attack aimed at claiming the life of Sage/Jaron. Conner is arrested and Jaron assumes his rightful throne.

sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good

Sage has never been keen on the fact that he was an orphan but usually the trouble he got into was something he could handle.  No longer.  When Sage finds himself essentially sold to a nobleman named Conner it doesn’t take long for him to discover that he is now a pawn in a dangerous game.  Alongside three other orphans of similar age and build Sage is in the competition of a lifetime.  If he wins he will be crowned as prince (the real ruler having died years ago).  If he loses he will be killed.  It’s the ultimate competition and the stakes are as high as they can be.  Part mystery novel, part psychological war, you may see where the book is going at times but you’ll never forget the journey.
