This is a thoroughly enjoyable read, about life aboard a steamship in 1930, traveling the Inside Passage from Vancouver to Prince Rupert. We get to know several of the passengers and crew, from a 15-year-old boy whose mother has just died and he is now looking for his logger father, to the ship's captain, to a relatively unknown Emily Carr and her dog. Mel Dagg does a good job portraying a time now gone. I loved the times one of the characters had a realization that what was happening then that was commonplace, like strip logging, was not very good for the land, of learning about the man and his wife who lived on the land with no money but they were rich in many other ways. And then there is the adventure of working on a steamship in the perilous channels of the Inside Passage. If you are interested in our West Coast and Vancouver Island history, this novel is well worth reading.
