The story is about a young mother who goes into a coma after a boating accident. The father has to deal with this heartbreaking situation, when his daughters aged 10 and 17, do not, at first, make things easy. The younger one does not have a clue and lives her simple life until she learns that the decision has been made to take the woman off the life support. The older one is very antagonistic to her father. She knows her mother was cheating on her father and resent his ostrich-like attitude. I was especially taken by something the other reviewers seem to have missed or did not consider as important as I did, namely that the writer made sure that everybody involved had a lot of class. Class is something what cannot be faked, and here the close family members showed they had it at the time of crisis. It is often a crisis when the true character of individuals surfaces. When crisis hit here, the rebellious teenaged daughter came to her senses and became fully supportive of her father, the husband showed his love for his wife despite the pain of a cheated husband, and did not succumb to the hatred any other man in his position might do. The obnoxious daughter’s boyfriend came around and started behaving like a normal human being. The marriage breaker, the lover of the dying woman, turned out not to be such a scoundrel as one might predict, and his cheated wife shows she has much more class than an average woman would have in the same situation. Nobody kept holding grudge, the life was going on. This is an excellent, well-acted and directed movie, in the same category as American Beauty. Nevertheless, despite good official reviews it has not become a blockbuster. The average unsophisticated American moviegoer can-not be impressed by and does not appreciate an above-average movie where every other word is not the “f” or “n” word, where cars do not explode and where blood is not oozing from dead bodies, preferentially n*ked.

Three steps away on being a Hallmark movie with cliched tropes.
Glad the acting from ensemble cast, non-snowing setting & bittersweet ,yet thoughtful plot of letting go cheating wife in coma & should there be mega million development on unspoiled land with his extended family made it a great movie.
Phew.
Good for George to play age related uncharted role as a flawed father.

Any absolutely depressing movie - we quit halfway through. A totally dysfunctional family.

Although the movie left out some pertinent details that were in the book (like usual), the movie portrayal was quite entertaining on its own with some excellent acting & beautiful Hawaiian landscapes. (For a full review of this story, see my book review. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/968403.The_Descendants?from_search=true )

Age recommendation: 14 & up (profanity, discussions of infidelity, visuals of an comatose woman)

On a scale of 1-10 stars, I give it 7. (Book ranking - 7 stars)

I have an indifferent feeling to this movie. Don't really have an opinion. I'm not sure why that is. I enjoyed seeing the beautiful shots of Hawaii and I enjoyed the family history part of it, even though it is just for storytelling purpose. It was different but nice to see Clooney in a very un-Hollywood role. I think I was turned off by the Matthew Lillard and Judy Greer characters.

Pretty good movie but kind of slow and boring! Some beautiful shots of Hawaii.

Unique, unpredictable movie. Intensely moving scenes, even when nothing seems to be happening. Discomfort of the characters is palpable. Offbeat humor. I hated Payne's tedious "Sideways" (quit halfway through), but this one kept me mesmerized all the way.

Matt King: "Goodbye, Elizabeth. Goodbye, my love... my friend... my pain... my joy... Goodbye. Goodbye. Goodbye."

Frightening or Intense Scenes: A woman is shown in a coma. Some would find this display uneasy, although it doesn't go out of its way to be like that.

Coarse Language: The f-word is used 25 times, the s-word about a dozen times, goddamn just under 10 times, and Jesus twice. A little girl also gives someone the middle finger.

Sexual Content: The only truly crass scene is one where a little girl tries looking up adult films on an on-demand channel on television. The images are just still images and they're not overtly explicit. Her father and sister stop her from going any further than that. This scene lasts about 45 seconds.

Violence: A teenage boy is punched in the face by an older man. It's a P.O.V. shot, so we don't see the fist make contact. (I wouldn't be concerned in terms of violence. This moment is literally two seconds long.)
