Ria and Marilyn have never met - they live thousands of miles apart, separated by the Atlantic Ocean: one in a big, warm, Victorian house in Tara Road, Dublin, the other in a modern, open-plan house in New England. Two more unlikely friends would be hard to find: Ria's life revolves around her family and friends, while Marilyn's reserve is born of grief. But when each needs a place to escape to, a house exchange seems the ideal solution. Along with the borrowed houses come neighbours and friends, gossip and speculation as Ria and Marilyn swap lives for the summer...

Given by MO'C, she doesn't read Bnchy, but I enjoyed story of Ria (Maria) and Danny Lynch.

THIS IS A MUST READ!
My favorite "literary fiction" of 2002 to 2019. NOT overwritten. NOT soft porn. NOT heaped with nonsense descriptions and endless adjectives. The story of a marriage, a woman's friends and family (not always perfect, but you get what you get), and a spur of the moment decision when the world has fallen from under her feet. Ria is one of the most endearing and engaging characters I've ever "met." She is so wrapped up in her own happiness and the perfect house and family that she doesn't see it is all an illusion. ALL the characters are interesting in this novel (and it is a novel not just a book), and ALL the complications are completely believable. The pages just fly by.

This one was particularly difficult to get into. The first half of the book was very slow moving. If this was my first Binchy book I would have given up on it. I spent too much time waiting for the shoe to drop. Once it got going I enjoyed it, though. It was not my favourite by any means. I found the characters a bit over the top soapy and was annoyed with them as well.

I read this book back in 2004. When I watched The Holiday with Cameron Diaz and Jack Black, I couldn't help thinking that that movie was based on this book.

A very slow film. Unrealistic romance. Not recommended.

Maeve's books are hard to put down once you start reading them.
