One step forward. Two steps back. The Tufts scholarship that put Nora Stuart on the path to becoming a Boston medical specialist was a step forward. Being hit by a car and then overhearing her boyfriend hit on another doctor when she thought she was dying? Two major steps back. Injured in more ways than one, Nora feels her carefully built life cracking at the edges. There's only one place to land: home. But the tiny Maine community she left fifteen years ago doesn't necessarily want her. At every turn, someone holds the prodigal daughter of Scupper Island responsible for small-town drama and big-time disappointments. With a tough islander mother who's always been distant and a wild-child sister in jail, unable to raise her daughter--a withdrawn teen as eager to ditch the island as Nora once was--Nora has her work cut out for her if she's going to take what might be her last chance to mend the family. But as some relationships crumble around her, others unexpectedly strengthen. Balancing loss and opportunity, a dark event from her past with hope for the future, Nora will discover that tackling old pain makes room for promise... and the chance to begin again.

This is my first Kristin Higgins book and I read it for my book club. I normally like realistic fiction with female leads but this book felt a little flat. The best character in the book is Nora's mom. She's a hard nosed lady from Maine and her lack of peppy chatty exuberance is in perfect contrast to Nora's personality. I found the story fairly predictable and although there was some humor the jokes were really played out by the end.

Overall, if you need a quick easy read with a well known plotline this is a good book for you. If you want to have something interesting to talk about at book club, keep looking.

Nora Stuart escaped Scupper Island, Maine with a prized full-ride scholarship when she graduated from high school. She also left behind the fat, unhappy, smart girl and transformed herself into an educated, accomplished woman with a great job, doctor boyfriend, and loyal friends. When she's hit by the Beantown Bug Killer van crossing a street, she returns to Main to recuperate and is suddenly 17 and miserable again. Higgins creates a fast-moving plot, memorable characters, and uses both quirky and snarky humor to write a story that illustrates we can overcome our high school selves. Laugh-out-loud scenes include an ill-fated matchmaking dinner party that Nora throws for her mother, the portrayal of her high school nemeses, the Cheetos, and masquerading as her mother on an online dating site.

A good story but this isn't like Higgins' usual stories. This book is a bit darker and moodier than her others. Still a great read!

Good read,a little long with some heart ache but ends well. I enjoyed the feeling you get when someone works hard and reaps the benefits even though they weren't part of the in crowd in high school.

I've been on a Kristan Higgins binge, and this wasn't her best effort. Although I like the ending, it felt like work getting there.

Highly entertaining book that includes the life of a teenager that doesn't fit in with her classmates. After becoming a successful doctor she returns home for a respite after several life changing incidents in her somewhat perfect life. She begins to question many things in her life and how she got to where she is in life. Interesting characters that keep you interested in finding out the outcome in her life and those around her.
