My, my. I watched this to see Sidney Poitier--- always marvelous--- but also discovered the acting wonders of Rod Steiger. The two play-off of each other in an uncanny manner. MUST see.

As a fan of the film, the 40th Anniversary Collector's Edition adds much to the value of the story. The commentary by Director Norman Jewison, Lee Grant, Rod Steiger, and Haskell Wexler, the Cinematographer, puts one right on the set in the days and time of the filming. Several special features are included such as a favorite of mine "Quincy Jones: Breaking New Sound." A good piece of making-movies advice comes from that: own the songs that are on your soundtrack.

Just saw this movie on KQED last Sat. nite. Still one of the best civil rights movies around...Great performance by all, Steiger got Academy award, mainly because he did not get it in previous year for his really tortured role in The Pawnbroker... see that movie also for another great performance.

Wow this was really a great movie with wonderful acting. I checked it out and it sat here for several days and I was contemplating taking it back without watching. Finally did and what a great surprise. I saw it when it came out and liked it then but I could not remember much about it.

You need to spend a piece of your limited time left alive watching this instead of playing video games or getting drunk.

The movie is listed above as "Groundbreaking Classic Black Films" and I would add that it is also one of the finest films ever produced in the United States. All the cast shines, but especially Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger. They play off of one another the entire movie. Warren Oats as a deputy sheriff really pulls the entire cast together. He is so humorous that it lightens the mood of the movie. There are few movies with a script and cast that could stand up to "In The Heat of the Night".

Gillespie: I didn't know you'd slap any white man! Least of all Endicott!

Tibbs: All right. Give me another day. Two days. I'm close. I can pull that fat cat down. I can bring him right off this hill!

Gillespie: Oh, boy. Man, you're just like the rest of us.
