Unspeakably beautiful film full of spiritual wisdom, embracing the totality of the human experience. This film excels on multiple levels and communicates to all people at every stage of life. I highly recommend it.

Strange and compelling. For fans of Studio Ghibli (particularly the less known director, Isao Takahata), this film will appeal. Such an interesting tale in such a unique animation form that took me some time to get used to, but that I loved in the end, it was so exquisite. The story went from incredibly simple and sweet, to complex and deep and depressing. Do not expect a fairy tale in this movie. If anything, it's a tragedy. But the journey is so colorful and eye-catching (even sometimes humorous) that you can't help loving Kaguya and feeling for her as a character. She truly is the star of the movie.
Although it will never take the crown from my favorite Studio Ghibli films, it was very out-of-the-box and story-like. The realism here does not come from the animation (which gives more of the impression of a legend being re-told by painting it on a canvas), but from the characters and their plight. It's definitely Ghibli and definitely Takahata, I will say that.

Like many of the films from Studio Ghibli, there are messages to learn and the stories told are best appreciated by 10yr old and up viewers. This film shows how good intentions stifle the main character's wishes and wants in order to get ahead in the world.

Yeah, I cried. But hid it well by scratching corner of my eye. Allergies, you know.

Wow, what beautiful music and art work. The story had me pulled in. I wasn't even sure how it would end but I have to agree with muunlight; the ending was so sad I couldn't help but cry! This is defiantly not your happily-ever-after Disney movie but it is a beautiful story.

I agree with muunlight. This was a spectacular movie. Everything about was stunning and beautiful. But the sadness of the story overwhelmed me at the end of the movie.

Unfortunately, I cannot rate this magnificent movie. This had me balling with tears from the end of the movie to my sleep. I understand that this movie was based of an old Japanese folk tale, but I wish this could have had a better ending. Truly I do. I did not like how it ended (that's why I wanted to give it a one star), but this movie is just TOO GOOD not to give it a five star, so that is why I'm not going to rate it.

DO NOT BE FOOLED!

This film wants to make you cry, which it's very good at. While it does have its more lighthearted and funny moments... the ending's the saddest you can possibly get and still be narratively satisfying.

Stunningly beautiful animated fairy/folk tale from Japan. Released by the iconic Studio Ghibli, this has a different look than their house style, a look that can be called painterly and impressionistic. The usual princess plot is handled with tact and originality. Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahta directs. He also did "Grave of the Fireflies," possibly the saddest animated film ever made. The English voice actors include Chloe Grace Moretz, James Caan, Mary Steenburgen, Lucy Liu, and George Segal. A reminder of just how beautiful an animated film can be.

Sexual Content: A prince who comes to seek Kaguya for her beauty is kind of a creeper. A married man lies and seeks Kaguya's love, but is found out when his wife confronts him. Another married man asks to run away with her, forsaking his wife and child.

Other: In the official PG rating, it mentions the movie contains "partial nudity". This includes when women breastfeed and baby/toddler-age boys and girls run around without clothes that cover all of their private areas. It's not in detail, but it's clear to see.
