"When psychologist Kris Kelvin arrives at the planet Solaris to study the ocean that covers its surface, he finds himself confronting a painful memory embodied in the physical likeness of a past lover. Kelvin learns that hs is not alone in this, and that other crews examining the planet are plagued with their own repressed and newly real memories. Could it be, as Solaris scientists speculate, that the ocean may be a massive neural center creating these memories, for a reason no one can identify? Long considered a classic, Solaris asks the question: Can we understand the universe around us without first understanding what lies within?" -- back cover.

Excellent SciFi. A well paced novel set in unusual circumstance. Good read -

This is a beautiful, quiet masterpiece. While the setting is science-fiction, the story is about the nature of love, memory, desire, and what makes us human. This small book deserves a slow read and full attention. Before turning it back in, I re-read the last chapter and was very grateful I did. Beyond the author's ability to draw out and explore the universal experience of being human against a backdrop of surreal and fantastic events, the (translated) prose digs deep and commands admiration itself. May we all live in the hope of cruel miracles.

You won't be able to shake off that feeling of the ocean as one great big sentient entity; your beach days will likely never be the same again after reading this book.

Lem's hauniting masterpiece is one of those science fiction novels which transcend their genre to become literature.

A bit odd for my taste, but the allegorical structures and exploration of ideas thereby is entertaining and interesting.
