I highly recommend this book, hard to put down, and really touching at the end. It's about a young orphan named Pierrot, who is taken in by his aunt, a maid for Hitler. John Boyne never lets his readers down!

Boyne never disappoints with his WWII novels. In The Boy at the Top of the Mountain, he tells the story of Pierrot and how he is influenced by the rising power of Hitler. Through the story Pierrot loses his innocence and finds bitter hatred, a heartbreaking and honest transition. This is a great book for anyone in middle school on up - I highly recommend it.

Boyne uses this book, like his earlier work, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, to illustrate the banality of evil. Pierrot, the son of a French mother and a German World War I veteran, is orphaned at age 7. His Aunt Beatrix finds him in an orphanage in Orleans and brings him to Austria. As Pierrot adjusts to his new life, he gradually learns that his living at the Berghof where his aunt is a housekeeper for Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun. The bulk of the story is from 1936 to 1945 when Pierrot transitions into Pieter, idolizer of Hitler and accomplice of Nazi war criminals. The epilogue reveals what happened to Pierrot/Pieter after the war. This book would be great material for a book club discussion.

John Boyne never disappoints. Set in the Second World War at the peak of Hitler's power, this is story is about Pierrot, who is living in an orphanage in Paris, until his Aunt Beatrix sends for him to live with her in Austria. Beatrix is the housekeeper in Hitler's mountain retreat.

A fantastic book by the author of "Boy in the striped pyjamas". Set during WW2, it is told through the innocent eyes of a 7 year old boy sent to live with his aunty at Hitlers holiday villa in Austria. Pierrots view of the world and his relationship with others changes over the years as he becomes closer to Hitler. Great book. Highly recommend it.
