The moment the Grace family moves into the dilapidated Spiderwick Estate, strange things begin to happen. Jared is a curious, adventurous boy who quickly seeks out and finds the hidden laboratory of his great great uncle Arthur Spiderwick. He unleashes a mysterious force when he locates a field guide full of the secrets of the magical creatures that inhabit the forest surrounding the mansion. His twin brother Simon is calm and reserved. He is the intellectual twin, but is rapidly drawn into the fantastical world of fairies and goblins. Older sister Mallory and their mom are harder to convince, but after the almighty and ruthless ogre leader Mulgarath begins to attack the home, the entire family must band together to combat the hordes of goblins and creatures that lurk just outside.

The Spiderwick Chronicles is about the Grace family which consists of 3 kids and a divorced mother. They have moved into a new house and some of the kids aren’t too happy about this. Jared, one of the kids is quite curious about his new house and starts to roam around but, when he finds this book written by the previous resident of the house, Arthur Spiderwick, his world changes and he begins to see things he could not before. Jared tries to convince his brother, Simon and his sister Mallory about this new world but, it takes some time. Together they must protect the book at all costs from an ogre named Mulgarath who will not stop until the book is in his hands. The Spiderwick Chronicles is filled with action and adventure and at some points it made me laugh. I personally really enjoyed it and I would recommend this film. I would rate the Spiderwick Chronicles 4/5.

Probably kids would like it though the plot is lousy, acting poor. Lots of action and special effects.

Still smarting from a messy divorce, Helen Grace packs up her three kids and moves into the old family estate left vacant after crazy aunt Lucinda was committed for telling too many tall tales regarding her encounters with supernatural creatures; creatures she insists abducted her father 80 years earlier. At first the Grace kids view their musty new surroundings with varying degrees of resignation until a series of odd occurrences lead to the discovery of a most unusual book which sparks a battle royale between the little folk living on the Spiderwick estate and the despotic ogre residing in the nearby woods with his army of toad-like minions. For the book, compiled by Aunt Lucinda’s late father, contains some dangerous information and powerful spells which could devastate all life on earth, mortal and mystical alike, should they fall into the wrong hands (or claws, as it were). Filled with flowery fairies, rhyming brownies and drooling goblins in pirate drag, all carrying the prerequisite Harry Potter-like names of course (Thimbletack, meet Hogsqueal) this is at best a lukewarm serving of the “children’s fantasy” genre. The CGI effects are passable, the acting less so, and a rather bland script keeps any sense of peril, or wonder, consistently dampened for the single-digit crowd. Not a total waste of time, but with the likes of Joan Plowright and Nick Nolte I expected so much more.
