Defense attorney Richard Ramsay takes on a personal case when he swears to his widowed friend, Loretta Lassiter that he will keep her son Mike out of prison. Charged with murdering his father, Mike initially confesses to the crime. But as the trial proceeds, chilling evidence about the kind of man that Boone Lassiter really was comes to light. While Ramsay uses the evidence to get his client acquitted, his new colleague Janelle tries to dig deeper.

I really enjoyed this movie. The drama was not just about the case but the circumstances that led up to it which leads to a great twist at the end.

A court room drama as a family lawyer represented a teen who fatally stabbed his father. Viewers were led into the case and watched the secrets unfold through the eyes of the second chair attorney brought in on day-one of the trial. Pretty mundane legal thriller on the surface but with many subtle clues to the final twists which we knew were coming, just not sure exactly what. Excellent performance by Zellweger and Reeves in their roles.

How much do you know about Muhammad Ali?
-I know he didn't go to law school.
Better than that. In 1974, he took on George foreman, who was seven years younger, and had knocked out every man he'd fought. Foreman was at his peak. And Ali, round after round, just stood there getting pounded. He wouldn't or couldn't fight back. No one knew which.
-You mean the rope-a-dope?
Yeah. And finally, in the eighth round, foreman got tired, tired of punching, exhausted himself.
Suddenly, Ali came to life. In one round, foreman was on the canvas like an old man.
===
Why won't he talk to you?
-That's the problem with people who refuse to speak. They never say why.

Listen. It's your call, but Stanford is one of the top schools in the country and you got in early. I mean, look, I'm happy to go to Reed, check it out, but... It's weird. Maybe we should just declare
victory and head home early, huh? Surprise your mom? (A Surprise of all surprises for them.)
===
I didn't do that to save you!
===
The jury believed xxyyzz, ignored the facts and the law, did what they knew was right.
===
At some point, every defense lawyer has to choose between his own need to know the truth and the best interests of his client.

A wife doesn't have to testify against her husband, but a mother does against her child? Like the bond is somehow less or something? (It is True!)
