Before the Devil Breaks You
Book - 2017
After battling a supernatural sleeping sickness that early claimed two of their own, the Diviners have had enough of lies. They're more determined than ever to uncover the mystery behind their extraordinary powers, even as they face off against an all-new terror. Out on Ward's Island, far from the city's bustle, sits a mental hospital haunted by the lost souls of people long forgotten--ghosts who have unusual and dangerous ties to the man in the stovepipe hat, also known as the King of Crows. With terrible accounts of murder and possession flooding in from all over, and New York City on the verge of panic, the Diviners must band together and brave the sinister ghosts invading the asylum, a fight that will bring them face-to-face with the King of Crows. But as the explosive secrets of the past come to light, loyalties and friendships will be tested, love will hang in the balance, and the Diviners will question all that they've ever known. All the while, malevolent forces gather from every corner in a battle for the very soul of a nation--a fight that could claim the Diviners themselves.--Provided by Publisher.

Frightening or Intense Scenes: There is a moderately graphic "memory of a rape" scene where the POV suddenly switches to second-person (telling it as if it's happening to YOU the reader) which can be intensely triggering for survivors.

The third book in the Diviners series is just as exciting as the two before it. I really liked reading this book because the setting- a haunted mental asylum- made it super creepy, but the characters were all as funny as ever. Libba Bray always combines horror with humour and seriousness too- and her characters and plots have so much diversity. The supernatural powers make the story super exciting, and all of her characters have so much depth and they each have their own interesting backstory. Each character has their own personality and Libba Bray does a great job of showing each of their points of view. 9/10 stars

What a powerful story! Bray offers readers a nuanced picture of social and political issues that were particularly significant in the U.S. during the 1920s and are still with us today, albeit in the somewhat different (but not all *that* different) context of contemporary U.S. society. The audiobook is excellent--after I finished listening to it, I had to check the print edition out from HCL to reread/reexperience the story all over again!
This book swerves in a different direction than the first two and felt like the Empire Strikes Back of the series. While the first two were supernatural mysteries with big bad ghost that needed to be defeated, along with a backdrop of conspiracy, the third installment pulls the mysterious bigger bad of the first two books, the Man in the Stovepipe Hat, and the mortal conspiracies of Project Buffalo and the Shadow Men into the foreground, as well as focusing more on the relationships of the main characters. There are big revelations, big plot twists, and things get much more complicated and dangerous for our heroes. And that's all I can say without revealing spoilers. Now that the stakes have been upped, I'm even more eager to see where this series goes.
Loved it!!! Another great book in this series. Libba Bray never lets her readers down.
If you want to read about the 1920's, suspense, and ghosts read this series.
