I feel like her books always take 100 pages to get into the story, but they are always interesting, not your usual fairytale

I love this series, Blackthorn & Grim. The characters the story the ending, where I wish this story continued!

At page 123.
Told from three characters' viewpoint, two of which are interesting.
The third is excruciatingly wordy and bland, you figure out which one. It's upper-crust, hoity-toity yawndom.

I don't know what this book is. I don't know if it's a fairy tale retelling or something original. If it IS Goose Girl, then it's missing pretty much all the original elements. It's surely not a mystery, because the mysteries are dispatched too easily. The twist for the main one is obvious by page 118 (note that the main mystery begins on page 107). I don't even care for the fantasy elements, which are never allowed to shine and have to content with Deus ex Conmael ready with TNT, fast horses, and a lawnmower (yes, I'm being serious) to set the world exactly as the protagonists need it at any given moment. The plot is so juvenile it's practically a children's story, but the content--rape, murder--is pretty adult. It IS a compelling read if only because Marillier has an excellent grasp on how to spin a sentence, so the descriptions are gorgeous. But otherwise, don't bother. Marillier has written much better books than this.

I am a fan of much of Marillier's work. I would have said that this was not equal to the Bridei Chronicles, but I knocked it over in a few days and will probably read the next in the series so still good reading.

I rather enjoyed this novel, the author wove historical fiction with contemporary messages trending in social media regarding gender equality and social justice. I look forward to the next book.
