Meet Dexter Morgan, a polite wolf in sheep's clothing. He's handsome and charming, but something in his past has made him abide by a different set of rules. He's a serial killer whose one golden rule makes him immensely likeable: he only kills bad people. And his job as a blood splatter expert for the Miami police department puts him in the perfect position to identify his victims. But when a series of brutal murders bearing a striking similarity to his own style start turning up, Dexter is caught between being flattered and being frightened-of himself or some other fiend.

I was looking for a book that had a serial killer, a bad person who’s deceiving everyone, as the main character, and this fits the description I was looking for perfectly. The dark humour in this got me laughing, and I absolutely loved it. I heard there was a T.V. Series on this book, and that the book didn’t meet the reader’s expectations after watching the series. I think I’ll still love the book either way.

Definitely a different angle on a mystery/thriller novel, from the point of view of a killer. full of plot twists and morbid humor, once you start reading it's hard to stop.

A quick read that does a good job of getting into the head of a sociopath serial killer who only kills other killers. The payoff in this book is lost a little bit if you have seen the TV series since you know the result of the conflict. Had some darkly comic moments. The narrative is well done with characterizations other then Dexter not being very in depth. The series needed to develop the characters to fill out the episodes so they are better done in the series. Worth reading if you are interested.

Interesting read but I prefer some of the character choices they went with in the show over the original book.

Mixed thoughts

An interesting read, in terms of the perspective of a flat affect, no emotion, trying to pretend to be normal, killer of killers.

I’m not sure if it was stylistically intended, but other characters come across as cardboard cutouts, boring. Possibly this is due to Dexter himself lacking full insight into what drives them, moves them.

Plotwise, interesting, and it was a quick read for an afternoon.

I was a bit disappointed, as this had been recommended to me by others, both for the book series and the television series, but this just doesn’t quite live up to the suggestions.

I first met Dexter when I discovered the TV show on Netflix. I embarked on an epic marathon of the series, and when it came to an end, I was satisfied with my experience. So when I saw the series was originally books, I added them the my TBR pile (to-be-read for you non-nerds :P).

Here is a brief summary of what Darkly Dreaming Dexter made me think:

Gosh, does Dexter talk this much in the show? Why do I hate the characters that I loved in the show? WAIT they changed that?!?!

Ultimately, Dexter is a charming serial killer who lives and works in Miami. He has fake friends, a filler girlfriend, and a job that allows him to hunt his victims - other bad guys.

KC Rating: 4/5

The book left me disappointed after watching the show, but it wasn't BAD. Fans of true crime and crime fictions will enjoy the insight into Dexter's brain that Jeff Lindsay creates. It's an easier read with lots of self-reflection and dialogue. My fingers are crossed that the rest of the series will be better, or at least just not worse!

A great start to what continues to be a wonderfully macarbe series. Funny, witty and charmingly dark I recommend the Dexter series to anyone who likes their crime books with a twist and a dark laugh.

Loved the first book but I am really disappointed that the library doesn't have books 2-7, yet has 8 on order. It doesn't make sense.

A loveable serial killer. No, seriously. Truly enter the mind of a monster not unlike the average person...except that he's a serial killer, of course.

Witty and attractive, blood-spatter scientist Dexter Morgan leads a double life as a serial killer.Due to a heavy influence from his foster-father, a police officer, however, he only kills those deserving of his unique brand of justice. When his vice-cop sister investigates a series of prostitute centered killings, Dexter decides to lend a hand - if mainly because of his fascination with the killer, whose style closely resembles his own.

Could that somebody possibly be darkly dreaming Dexter?"
