If you like the idea of "The Battle of Stalingrad" as a video game with actors sporting Oxford accents than this is the movie for you. If you are looking for something more realistic take a look at Josef Vilsmaier's "Stalingrad" or Elem Klimov's "Come and See".

2005 A very good war movie about the Battle for Stanlingrad in WW2. Although NOT historically accurate in some parts, it is the legend of the Soviet hero Vasily. A well done movie.

It was bloody and had bad language, but it was still a great movie.

Too much Hollywood and too much music.

This war film is interesting because it's about the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942-43, which ultimately led to the defeat and retreat of German forces, but is almost entirely free of Russian or German actors. And the director is French. Cinema truly is a universal language! Based on a true story, Jude Law is a Soviet sniper in a sniper off with German Ed Harris. Other dubious Russians are Rachel Weisz, Ron Perlman, Joseph Fiennes, and, just for fun, Bob Hopkins as Krushchev. Once you get past all this, it's a pretty well-done war movie with good action scenes and a suitably devastated looking Stalingrad. Something close to 2 million people died, which is just horrifying. It's the rare film that takes the Russian perspective (if not their politics), so it's worth seeing in contrast to the typically patriotic and heroic American World War II movies. Directed, co-written, and produced by Jean Jacques Annaud, whose other films include "In the Name of the Rose" and "Seven Years in Tibet."

Good movie about the battle of Stalingrad, and specifically about the struggles of Vassili and his fellow soldiers. Brutal and bloody fighting depicted, one sex scene about halfway through for those concerned. There were definite uses of dramatic license for the sake of the story, but still a good movie overall.

Not only did Jude Law deliver once again, Ed Harris at one of his finest. It is amazing how many times Ed gets a supporting role the borders on being the main one. Script shows yet another story about the USSR/Germany confrontation not widely known otherwise.
