Just saw this at the Admiral Twin (part of their Studio Ghibli Series). I was amazed at all the logistics inconsistencies and anachronisms. I didn't remember this from the first time I saw it. Kiki starts in a Japanese town (with clearly signs in Japanese Kanji) and flies "South" to the town of Koriko which is some quasi-european city (with signs in some Germanic-Swedish lettering ... also the cars all drive on the right side). There she starts her "training" in witchcraft. How does she learn? By the seat of her pants? (pun there, sorry). There's no other witch (part of the appeal of this place) and not once does she go to the library (to read up on ... "witchcraft"?) She naturally practices her "skill" which she wants to be broom flying but she clearly could use a few pointers but there's none. The TVs are low-res and only BW so I'm guess the period is late 50s (also by the cars). She befriends a local (named Tombo) who flies his human-powered aircraft of which the tech doesn't exist for at least another 30 years. She sets up her business (delivering via witch's broom) complete with metal sign and the film ends with her writing to her mother (another witch) on how well she's doing. She's supposed to intern for a year. Does she go back, leaving her business? What about school? Obviously, SG went for a great story and graphics and ignored these details.

The external notions of the film are so incongruous (a young (13 year old) witch, in the early 20th century, in a European city, with Japanese writing) that the patience and the story-skill have to do all the narrative seduction - and it does. Its a tender story, never lags, and the music near the beginning and at the end is quite good.

We are watching / rewatching all the Studio Ghibli movies in the library. This one is charming and timeless. Kiki the witch finds her feet (and masters her broom) and makes friends in a new town. The cast of supporting characters is full of the usual Ghibli character and fun.

A whichy coming of age adventure by Miyazaki's Studio Ghibbli animation house. Delightful anime landscape and happenings to be enjoyed.

I wonder when you got this DVD i had asked you to get this dvd a coople times and you had got it finally i always wanted to watch this movie i have it on VHS specail edition from 2003 we bought this year on vhs aswell Castle in the Sky on VHS i thought it was the 2ed movie to Kiki's dilvery survies but it is so tottloy diffrent but i like them.

If anyone can pull off a fantastic movie without a physical villain, it's Studio Ghibli. Trivia: Kiki's Delivery Service came out in 1989, nearly a decade before Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Light and fun.

Entertaining Miyazaki animated feature, but not with the complex story line of Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited Away, or Princess Kaguya. The bonus feature showing the two locations in Sweden that were inspirations for the setting was very interesting.

Kiki: If I lose my magic, that means I've lost absolutely everything.

Jiji: You'd think they'd never seen a girl and a cat on a broom before.
