A bit peculiar and unorthodox period drama. If it's close to the real story, it's quite shocking. My biggest problem was with the ending and some of the film-making techniques - the use of the fish-eye lens in particular. That aside, some splendid performances. Weird but worth a look.

An inventive, somewhat bizarre film, The Favourite is undeserving of all the vitriol thrown its way in the comments here. Perhaps I had low expectations. I thought, I'll give it 20 minutes then turn it off if I'm bored, and I never was. This interpretation of history may not be factually accurate, but you can tell truth with fiction and that's what the viewer gets here. The political machinations and personal vendettas we see in the West today are an old, old story. Come for the Oscar-worthy performances. Stay for the WTF-ery.

Period piece with an air of authenticity. It was a good movie and it made me glad I wasn't born during that time period.

This movie despite it's awards sucked. A sick, repulsive, and sexually offensive 'historical" drama that despite it's great actors was unwatchable. I'm no prude but man o man this grossed me out.

Simply awful. Over-sexed, perverted, tawdry, far-fetched simply unbelievable as well as not based on any hard facts. Skip it and be glad you were spared.

This film certainly is divisive. Judging by all the low ratings, this movie is clearly not for everyone. I actually liked it quite a lot! To be clear, this is historical fiction. Having seen and enjoyed The Lobster (The Favourite and The Lobster are both directed by Yorgos Lanthimos), I figured I was in for a bizarre film, and that ended up being true. The Favourite is funny at times and very dramatic in general. The story centers upon the relationship between the three female leads; the competition to win favor with Queen Anne by Abigail, and the mounting need to stay in favor by Sarah. I thought that all the acting in this movie was superb; everyone delivered, even those with smaller roles. The titles of the acts lend to the absurd tone, and most of the comedy is weird; I felt as though I was watching a circus. The fish eye lens adds to that effect. It's entertaining, but I was also highly aware of the abusive, manipulative behavior that most of the characters display and endure. Characters are sympathetic at times, and disgusting at other times. I don't know if I'd say that there are any likeable characters in this film. I'd recommend this movie to those who enjoy odd films and are ok with cursing and sexual content. If you were looking for a classic, beautiful period film based mostly in truth, I don't think you will find what you are looking for in this movie.

Disgusting. The foul language, the movie earns a X rating.
After watching I read some of the history of Queen Anne. This movie certainly took license.
I don't recommend this to anyone but the perverse.

Absolutely horrible movie and a terrible distortion of history. I've learned to never trust a movie that gets Oscar nominations. What has happened to Hollywood movies?

We were bored to tears. The costumes and sets were good which was the only positive thing I can say about the movie. Wish I had read the comments first and skipped the movie. Don't understand how such a movie could be nominated for an Academy Award, which was why I watched it.

40 good quotes in IMDb. The writing is edgy and quirky as this one:

Abigail: Have you come to seduce me, or rape me?
Masham: I am a gentleman.
Abigail: So, rape then.
