Tom Clancy Enemy Contact
Large Print - 2019
Jack Ryan, Jr.'s race to stop an international criminal conspiracy is intertwined with the fate of an old friend in this blistering entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling series.
The CIA's deepest secrets are being given away for a larger agenda that will undermine the entire Western intelligence community. Director of National Intelligence Mary Pat Foley wants it stopped but doesn't know who, how or why.
Jack Ryan, Jr., is dispatched to Poland on a different mission. The clues are thin, and the sketchy trail dead ends in a harrowing fight from which he barely escapes with his life.
If that's not bad enough, Jack gets more tragic news. An old friend, who's dying from cancer, has one final request for Jack. It seems simple enough, but before it's done, Jack will find himself alone, his life hanging by a thread. If he survives, he'll be one step closer to finding the shadowy figure behind the CIA leak and its true purpose, but in the process, he'll challenge the world's most dangerous criminal syndicate with devastating consequences.

Add a CommentPonderous and dull. Story threads were ineffectually connected and much of the time I felt like I was being lectured to on various topics. My least favourite Clancy book and I hope this author either picks up his storytelling skills or refrains from writing another.

You know, entertaining enough. However, more like living vicariously through a forensic accountant rather than living vicariously through a daring international man of action! Paper trails and cloud computing security threat vectors were the theme, rather than daring action missions. There were some moments, but one can't help but lament previous books.
The Clancy franchise used to do better than new topic, new chapter: "Clarke held a gun to The Czech's knee" without lavish and detailed multi-chapter descriptions of how Clark got to the Czech's knee: equipment checks and camaraderie, hostile country ingress via parachute from covert craft, infil to hostile compound dispatching guards and guard dogs, breaching perimeters, gung-ho charging about, crash-bangs through windows, ... and then finding the target ... and only then holding a gun to his knee. Oh well. As I say, entertaining enough. B/B+
It is slow going at first. The author is setting out a fairly dense, intertwined storyline. But the it starts to come together and move quickly. If you like espionage, this is a good one.
Maden bangs this one. Remember your World History. Circa 1939....Patience.....China will win regardless of the cost or means.
MIke Maden does a great job carrying on Tom Clancy's Ryan series. Clancy himself wrote great stories, but tended to get way into the weeds on technological things. Maden also tends to get into the weeds, but his weeds are generally around geopolitical matters. I prefer Maden's weeds, and some of them prompt some fact checking - like in this story, the economy of Poland - which checks out - so I learned something. The underlying story in this book also focuses one's attention on a critical, modern issue, in my opinion - cybersecurity. In this case, that word refers not to our individual cybersecurity, but to state security. And Maden's imagination (I hope that's what it is) presents some really horrifying possibilities. I do hope its all fiction. The story line is interesting, the characters are well developed, and there are lots of sub-story lines that make the whole thing both engaging and scary. It is a long book, but well worth the time to read it.
