The problem with movies about fictional musicians is that the music is rarely (Spinal Tap) as good as the music they're paying homage to. For example, "Dreamgirls" is basically the Supremes, but without any memorable songs. That said, Robert Townsend's "The Five Heartbeats" is a pretty entertaining look at a Motown-like singing group in the 60s. The Temptations seem like the model. The songs aren't great, but the performances are good and the period nicely evoked. Like so many groups, egos, sex, drugs, and money tear them apart. Also check out "Cadillac Records," and the documentaries "Only the Strong Survive" and "Standing in the Shadows of Motown."

Bad acting, fairly boring. Did I care? No. Should you? Probably not. Rent Streets of Fire, Ray or Dreamgirls instead.
