Nice combination of family story narrative fiction with science fiction thrown in. The science is based on current theories about the nature of time and space. The characters are well described and developed. Enjoyable read.

A New & Noteworthy pick. Part sci-fi, part coming-of-age story. Young Nedda Pappas wants to become an astronaut. Her father wants to slow down time. The book is all one magical journey.

This is beautiful science fiction. It flipped between two time periods of the protagonist's life - 1986 after the Challenger explosion and an unmarked future year when she is fulfilling her dream of being an astronaut. In this future, with a group of 3 others, Nedda is flying to an unnamed planet to set up a colony. Each timeline centers around a unique machine. With very descriptive writing, we learn about the interesting circumstances surrounding this machine and the town Nedda grew up in.
