I agree. So confusing with all these troubled girls, Elsie, Zoe, Kat, and the narrator. A twist at the end might compensate for this confusion. There are many British crime shows on tv that deal with this problem: "Vera" for example. Another question: Do all the male characters have to be portrayed as monsters?

What a tremendous disappointment. This has to be the most confusing book I've ever read.
