As YA books go, this one is definitely a cut above — although it will inevitably be placed in a category with John Green’s work, which is tough competition. Authentic, at times intense, never morose or weepy; and thankfully, not contrived or manipulative as its subject matter would have risked becoming. Entering that most difficult age, where a kid’s social receptors become painfully acute, when self-image and peer relationships really begin to take center stage, Harrell’s protagonist finds himself “sticking out”, which is the polar opposite of his instinctive need to fit in, to merge seamlessly into his surroundings. I’m pretty sure that Harrell aimed the book at an early-teen audience, as evidenced by his inclusion of Ross’s “Batpig” comics, but most adults, especially those who find themselves dealing with teens, are likely to find it an easy, enjoyable read.

Even though it is about a 7th grade boy with cancer, this is not your typical "sad" book. Harrell does a great job with his main character, 12-year-old Ross who would like everyone at school to forget that he undergoing treatment for cancer and just go back to ignoring him as usual. Ross likes to draw so the story includes his drawings, including his ongoing Bat-pig comic. Funny and at times very bittersweet, this is a sure bet for middle school readers, especially those that like Wonder by R. J. Palacio.
