Why aren’t there more John Singleton movies available in the library’s collection? What other movie both defined and era (1980’s) as well as promote a popular culture theme (gangsta) to North America at the same time? This movie although a bit dated and done so much better with Singleton’s Snowfall series still is worth the time to watch again.

Beware, crude language and reality based violence! This 1991 film is probably one of the best at depicting what urban African-American youth have to go through in an attempt to survive. See an all star cast of Cuba Gooding, Jr, Ice Cube, Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne, and Morris Chestnut. Laurence Fishburne plays the knowledgeable adult who understands that the establishment forces are at the root of violence in the African-American community while African-American youth are victims in one way another of those establishment forces.

Very well done movie. A pleasure to watch. I would recommend this movie for all to see.

A great film. Leads up well to what is intended to smack you in the face in the final act. Moving and attention-grabbing, this film has no qualms about stating the facts as is, including the brutality and the discomfort of daily life, particularly in eighties to nineties era Los Angeles. Gang violence is examined from differing points of views, but remaining in the perspective of those involved, those living it. Most importantly, it shows a side of masculinity, a sense of strength, that is rarely shown on screen. I applaud both the cast's performance and the writing. I certainly recommend BOYZ N THE HOOD.
