It's the extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he singlehandedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers.

War movie well done. Combat scenes very good, rest of film good.

One of the most inspiring films I've ever seen, telling the story of of a man who becomes a hero under fire without firing a shot. The courage it takes to go into the carnage of war is great, but it fades beside the courage of a man who goes into battle unarmed for the purpose of saving lives instead of taking them. An amazing motion picture!

Directed by Mel Gibson and originally released as a motion picture in 2016, this 139-minute WWII docudrama depicts a story of Desmond Doss, an American pacifist combat medic who was a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, refusing to carry or use a firearm or weapons of any kind.
Doss' unit was assigned to the 77th Infantry Division and deployed to the Pacific theater.
During the Battle of Okinawa, Doss' unit was informed that they were to relieve the 96th Infantry Division, which was tasked with ascending and securing the Maeda Escarpment ("Hacksaw Ridge”).
The battle at Hacksaw Ridge turned out to be one of the deadly battlegrounds during WWII.
Doss became the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor, for service above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle of Okinawa.
It is one of the best anti-war dramas I've ever watched.

Excellent movie about how courage is not necessarily just macho physicality in the middle of war. Based on the true story of a WWII conscientious objector who bravely served as a medic and persisted despite his peers' hazing and his superiors' attempts to have him categorized as crazy. Sweet love story in the background, a good counterweight to horrific depictions of the war in the Japanese-held islands.

This was an excellent movie! I normally don't like war movies, but this one was very good.

5 stars-- Hack Saw Ridge is an inspiring, true story of an exceptional man and the magnificent warriors who fought and suffered in the battle for Okinawa.. If the battle scenes in war movies are too realistic for Americans, please consider reading the non fiction books. It's our obligation as Americans to study history and learn from it. Nobody is asking us to "live it."
Mel Gibson is a master story teller. Great movie. I just checked out the book and will do some research on Desmond Doss and the battle. The South Pacific island battles during WW2 have spawned a million true tales of uncommon valor of our American Marines,Army,Navy. Their stories are important.

Far to violent for kids, but an amazing story.

Garfield's acting was the worst attempt at infatuation with his love interest that I spent the first half of the movie being ashamed. A cardboard cut-out would have served just as well.
It was embarrassing and I couldn't take any more. I didn't even care how good the rest of the film was, it ruined any possibility for the story. Ask yourself "what would Brando do?" and
it would have been anything besides Garfield's way of showing fascination with a woman. He just stood there slobbering all over, starring. Too bad for the rest of the movie.

If it weren't for the unvarnished depiction of battlefield wounds and fighting, I would recommend this movie to anyone. The story of Desmond Doss is one of courage, conviction, grit and determination, but I had a hard time watching the second half of it (which takes place on the battlefield).

Violence: Gruesome, realistic depictions of battle, death, and Japanese harikari (suicide as an honorable act). Also emotional and physical abuse/beatings of the conscientious objector.

Mar 10, 2017

Frightening or Intense Scenes: In addition to a ton of nasty war violence, there is a scene early on of a man's leg graphically injured in an accident. A young man's parents fight; one holds a gun and seems to contemplate turning it on himself. Boys brawl and one is hit with a brick.

Mar 10, 2017

Sexual Content: A soldier's naked rear is visible as he lounges in the barracks before being forced to run the obstacle course. Bunkmates rib him about his anatomy. Another man is reading a magazine with a drawing of a topless woman. A married couple kisses passionately.

Mar 10, 2017

Violence: Here's where the movie gets the R. I saw it in theaters and had to look away several times. Relentless wide shots of shooting, maiming, and killing during the last half, and numerous close-ups of nasty injuries being treated.

Mar 10, 2017

Coarse Language: Occasional, relatively mild language. No f-bombs.

Tons of quotes in IMDb already but this one:
I've done everything they asked me, except this one thing, and I'm being treated like a criminal just 'cause I won't kill.
-You tried. Nobody can say you didn't. But who are you going to save in prison?
Probably nobody.
-Then why can't you just pick up the stupid gun and wave it around? You don't have to use it, just meet them halfway.
-I can't do that.
Yes, you can. It's just pride. Pride and stubbornness. Don't confuse your will with the Lord's.
-Have I been prideful?
Maybe I am prideful. But I don't know how I'm going to live with myself if I don't stay true to what I believe. Much less how you could live with me. I'd never be the man that I want to be in your eyes.
-I fell in love with you because you weren't like anyone else and you didn't try to be. Do not think for one moment that you will disappoint me. I will love you no matter what.
