A page turner! The narrator, Alfred de Marigny, was charged and found not guilty of the murder of the eccentric, uncouth and shabby Sir Harry Oakes - his father-in-law. He wrote this book to clear his name and, to point a finger at the likely mastermind behind the murder. Sir Harry Oakes (1874-1943) participated in the Klondike gold rush but eventually made his fortune by discovering rich gold deposits in Ontario. In 1935 he moved to the Bahamas to avoid taxes, for a healthier climate, and from disappointment at snubbed political appointments in Canada. He became a major real estate developer on the Caribbean island; and a member of its legislature. He was honoured with a baronetcy for his philanthropy to England in 1939. At this time, the former Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor, who abdicated the crown to marry an American divorcee, was the Governor of the Bahamas.
