A must-read for fans of Agatha Christie's Poirot and Margery Allingham's Campion Mysteries, Lord Peter Wimsey is the immortal amateur sleuth created by Dorothy L Sayers.

Can Lord Peter Wimsey prove that Harriet Vane is not guilty of murder - or find the real poisoner in time to save her from the gallows?
Impossible, it seems. The Crown's case is watertight. The police are adamant that the right person is on trial. The judge's summing-up is also clear. Harriet Vane is guilty of the killing her lover. And Harriet Vane shall hang.
But the jury disagrees.

A pleasant three day read...a little complicated but a whimsical yarn. Recommended!

Sayers's last 4 books, beginning with this one, are her best, I think. I've re-read all of them several times, which I have not done with the previous books. Never mawkish or saccharine, these 4 books, in addition to being excellent mysteries, are love stories; the great Peter Wimsey has at last fallen deeply and permanently in love. Harriet Vane is someone I wish I could know. She's a wonderful heroine, strong, fallible, and believable.
Truly I wish I could know the whole bunch of them: Lord Peter, Bunter, Harriet, and Peter's strange and appealing family.

The book was okay – but not one of my favorites.

The first meeting of Harriet Vane and Peter Wimsey takes place in a courtroom where Harriet is on trial for killing her lover. Peter is head over heels as he watches her day after day but when he confesses his love, Harriet dismisses him. So he must defend the lady he loves and he starts an investigation to save her from the hangman's noose and clear her of all suspicion. If you know Peter, this is an ordinary task that he will undertake with great aplomb.

Dorothy Sayers' books are always great! A lot of description, but most of it is necessary to the story.
