At 14 years old, Tony began an affair with a married woman that ended when the jilted husband, a devout Roman Catholic, sent Tony to a Benedictine abbey. There, Tony met the remarkably kind and compassionate Father Joe. For the next four decades, Father Joe's guidance never faltered, even as Tony failed in marriage, fought substance abuse, and struggled to find meaning.

This surprising book details the long-time relationship between a British Benedictine monk and a fervent, then lapsed, Catholic. “Don’t tell the abbot,” the gentle monk sometimes says when he offers his advice to the struggling writer. Despite his sometimes “indifference to the divine,” Hendra maintains the friendship. Although Hendra as narrator is a bit breathy at times, I love his intonations of Father Joe, the little stutters fondly recalled by “Tony Dear,” as he was often addressed by his mentor and father figure.
