The audacious new V. I. Warshawski novel from the New York Times -bestselling author

"Doctors take days off--why not PIs?" V.I. Warshawski demands. But when America's hardest-working private eye goes clubbing, a stranger is shot and dies in her arms.

V.I. has been visiting Club Gouge, Chicago's edgiest nightspot, where a woman known as the Body Artist turns her naked body into a canvas for the audience to paint on.

The show attracts all kinds of people, from a menacing off-duty cop to Ukrainian mobsters and Iraq war vets--and V.I.'s impetuous cousin, Petra. A tormented young painter shows up, too, and the intricate designs she creates on the Body Artist drives on of the vets into a violent rage.

When the painter is shot, the cops figure it's an easy collar--PTSD vet goes off the rails, stalks then kills young woman. But the vet's family hires V.I. to clear his name, and the detective uncovers a chain of ugly truths that stretch all the way from Iraq to Chicago's South Side.

The author weaves at least 4 story lines into this novel each involving overlapping characters. I found it best not to leave too much time between reads in order to follow the story. The
is novel, for me, was overly long and finally boring as it took the author forever to reveal any clues to the murder(s) and relationships among the characters. Her detective proceeds with many investigations with each leading to a deadend, and, in between these events, the author describes her detective walking the dogs, tramping around in the freezing cold, snowy weather, and doting on her young attractive cousin, Petra. As further middle of the book fill, she reviews continually the same information about the characters. I had to agree with the statement made by one of the characters, a confidante of V.I. Warshawski, "You may make sense to yourself, but its gibberish to me". For me, there was too little tension in this novel.

This is a wonderfully Chicago mystery story. I loved the sense of the Chicago neighborhoods and suburban areas that are conveyed. The charcters are unique and colorful. V I Warshawski is once again a tough but sensitive PI who uses her wits and her many friends to help her solve a complex and diabolical crime. She makes some new friends along the way. The body artist is one of the most cleverly written characters I have read about in a long time. The Iraq war veterans are well-written and their story is timely.
