Three stars. If this was 1928 instead of 2019, I'd probably award it 5 stars...compared to what else was available at that time. This is a huge convention-shattering feature.
It's still a pretty terrific film--obviously ground-breaking. Early sound techniques were so clunky and difficult to work with, that the film probably is better because it was made a year or so BEFORE talkies were introduced. More visual freedom.
The background of the movie--lots of it here, in print and on the disc--gives the 21st century viewer an appreciation of why this film still matters almost 100 years after it was made, and why it's something of a miracle we can view it the way it is here in the first place.
Perhaps the finest silent film ever made.
The English invaders burned resistance-leader St Joan at the stake. The film treats this religio-judicial murder as a pivotal crime of the millennium. Falconetti plays an uncanny Joan. Make sure to set the music on. (The actual trial was quite different: Joan argued forcefully and brilliantly, sometimes threatening her judges with damnation. Only after nearly five months of harsh physical treatment and vexing interrogations did she reach the state of exhaustion shown in the film. For background, see my comment to Larissa Taylor, VIRGIN WARRIOR.)
This is among the very best films I have ever seen. The version with musical accompaniment is profound.
[adj., n. pur-fikt; v. per-fekt]
conforming absolutely to the description or definition of an ideal type: a perfect sphere; a perfect gentleman.
excellent or complete beyond practical or theoretical improvement: There is no perfect legal code. The proportions of this temple are almost perfect.
exactly fitting the need in a certain situation or for a certain purpose: a perfect actor to play Mr. Micawber; a perfect saw for cutting out keyholes.
entirely without any flaws, defects, or shortcomings: a perfect apple; the perfect crime.
accurate, exact, or correct in every detail: a perfect copy.
Best when watched entirely silent.
This is one of the best films I've ever seen. The character of Joan is magnificent - a saint crying all the way to God.
