R. J. Palacio’s book ‘Wonder,’ far exceeded the movie in my opinion, at least as the movie came to a close, the last five minutes. It is hard to read this book or watch the movie and not have the strings of your heart touched. While I enjoyed R. J. Palacio’s book ‘Wonder,’ I found that the ending of the movie was disappointing and Auggies Greatness was not defined as well as it had been described in the book. The movie simply missed or left out so much of the definition of what August (Auggie) Pullman was, a vulnerable yet courageous young man. As Mr. Tushman says, as he reads – “and this is what defines human beings, the Henry Ward Beecher Medal is about recognizing Greatness - Courage, Kindness, Friendship and Character.” “Not just the nature of kindness but the nature of one’s kindness. The power of one’s friendship. The test of one’s character. The strength of one’s courage.” The screen writers simply blew it in the last five minutes of the movie. It does not ruin the movie and you may not see it if you have not read the book. A lot can be learned from reading this book. It’s not just about how we speak to and about one another but how we treat one another and tolerate or not tolerate how our friends or colleagues behave in these situations. A good book for parents to read to or with their children and movie to watch. Read the book first; recommended by Senior Doctor-at-Bass-Fishing! D. A.
