It's World War II and the United States has issued a law that both men and women are now eligible for the draft. This is the story of several brave and unique women who join the fight for their own reasons. This book was addictive. Unfortunately for me it has a sequel "Silver Stars" and it doesn't seem to end there. I couldn't put it down and I even liked it enough to go on to book two. I have to admit that I am completely hooked! The story is told from multiple perspectives. First you have a mysterious narrator who knows all three girls. She introduces the story and moves you through points of time in the three main characters' service. Then you have the perspectives of Rio, who enlists at the age of 17 after her sister dies in the Navy. She and her best friend Jenou will end up fighting in a unit with both women and men. Frangie is African American and enlists to use her income to support her family. She longs to be a doctor, and ends up as a medic. Finally their is Rainy, who is Jewish, and longs to make the Germans pay for what they are doing to her people. She ends up in Military Intelligence because of her skills with languages. I didn't expect myself to like this book as much as I did. I honestly couldn't put it down. VERY GOOD!
