The weakest of the Ghibli movies, imho. What I, nor anyone, can dismiss is the gorgeous visuals. While the annoying titular character didn't fascinate me much, the absolute thrill of deep, complex animation sent me spinning. What an imaginative group the artists were and still are.
Above all, I think the reason I don't like it is it really *is* a kid's movie. And yes, I'm perfectly aware most Ghibli movies are, but when watching films such as Spirited Away or Arrietty, I never once, for a second, feel too old or mature to watch. With Ponyo, I find virtually nothing relatable. Maybe to have some more empathy for parents who's children act out in a bratty fashion in public. I took nothing away from this film, and I gave it more than one shot. This is one of the most fiercely defended of the Ghibli films, but it wouldn't need much defending if it were actually, you know, a decent watch?
