Starting from a Patricia Highsmith novel, this should have been a decent movie, but the screenplay just doesn't make the grade, and the actors and director (Andy Goddard) are not up to the job of rescuing it. The only thing that makes this film watchable are the striking visuals. There is a great deal of Douglas Sirk in the interiors and the colours - and even a tip of the hat to Carol Reed's moving shadows at the end. The music too evokes the suspense movies of the 1950s and 1960s. Cinema buffs will enjoy those aspects, but as a dramatic story the film is not a success.
