A boy discovers, on his birthday, that he has special abilities, and is sent to a special school. His best friends at this school are a girl, and a boy with red hair from a large family. Sound like anyone you know? A young wizard, perhaps? While it's easy to point out the similarities to Harry Potter, Charlie Bone (both the boy and the book) are nowhere near as good. Most of the heroic acts in the book are done by others, and Charlie himself is saved by the three older boys in the "climactic" scene (which the author seemed to rush through). Nimmo's writing is nowhere near as good as Rowling's. It's much more simplistic, and it doesn't feel as smooth as Rowling's. The action is confusing in places, and the characters don't feel as real, emotionally. I'll continue to read the next couple books, in hopes that the writing improves.
