The Essential 55

An Award-winning Educator's Rules for Discovering the Successful Student in Every Child
Sep 16, 2010
I ended up seeing this book one day at the library several years ago and I think I at least flipped through it and read some of the rules. I remember some of "Rule 9 Always say thank you when given something" enough though he had to take away an award or reward that a child had earned through competition. I thought through what he had mentioned that he shoouldn't have actually be allowed even as a teacher to take back the award or reward as the girl had *earned* the award or reward. However, I have noticed that if at least for me, if I do not say thank you in about 5 seconds, it becomes hard to say, "Thanks," or "Thank you." As Canadians, according to the cliche, we usually say, "Thanks" (or "Thank you,") and if I feel that someone has helped me, what does a "Thanks" cost me, really if the person has helped me? (Probably only 2 seconds.) Although I distinguish between the "Thanks" as casual and "Thank you" which is more formal, and I tend to use it as a sign of bigger appreciation than the former word.
